What is a Needlestick Injury?
Needlestick injury is the term used to describe an accident where a person’s skin is punctured accidentally by a hypodermic needle or sharp medical device.
This can lead to serious illness as well as affect the sufferer mentally. It’s an unfortunate reality that the majority of these incidents could have been prevented.
If you have suffered a needlestick injury, whether at work or in a medical environment, you may be entitled to claim for compensation due to personal injury.
Who is at Risk of Needlestick or Sharps Injury?
NHS staff including, doctors, nurses and all health care workers who are all highly at risk, with statistics indicating that 75% of NHS workers will at some point in their career suffer a needlestick injury.
They are not alone other industries were people may be at risk are:
- Police force
- Youth workers
- Refuse workers
- Prison officers
- Demolition/construction workers
Employers have a duty of care to their employees and procedures should be in place to minimise the risk of incident.
Training should be provided on the safe handling and disposal of needles. Containers for syringes should be provided and used, sharps bins should have solid plastic sides and a lid; they are designed to contain the discarded syringes and sharp medical devices. The sharps bin should never be over filled.
Accidents can however happen, it may be a discarded syringe or other sharp implement that you came into contact with whilst visiting a dentist, hospital, a communal area or maybe at work.
